How we compute it and its limits
  • We play the rest of the season 20,000 times with a match model and count how often each thing happens.
  • The model barely beats plain base rates: tested on 480 games of 2025 it picked the outcome 39.8% of the time, and always picking the home side 41.3% (log loss 1.0782 against 1.0837 for the base rates). Argentine football is very even; read the chances as rough.
  • Goals of every future game come from the model, so goal difference counts.
  • Ties that only Fair Play or a draw of lots can break are decided at random.
  • A relegation play-off (desempate) is a neutral game; extra time and penalties are a coin flip.
  • For each number of points we fix the club's results to give exactly that many points (more likely combinations more often) and play the rest of the season.
What the regulation says

How to use it

  1. ClubPick your club from the list.
  2. GoalPick what you want to check: avoid relegation, reach the playoffs, the Libertadores or the Sudamericana.
  3. Three levelsEach row: how many more points it takes to reach the goal with that chance. "Not enough" means that not even every point left gets there.
  4. ChartEach bar is a number of points taken and shows the chance of reaching the goal with those points.

The four goals

Points a club can still add

Points = wins × 3 + draws × 1

Example: The most a club can take is winning every game left. If even that does not reach a chance, the tool says "not enough".

Questions

Why is there no fixed number of points to stay up?

Because it depends on what the rivals get. The tool simulates the games left and counts how many points your club needs to reach the goal.

What if it finishes level on points with another club in the relegation spot?

They play a tiebreak game. We explain it in tiebreakers.

Can I set results by hand?

Yes, in the relegation simulator you pick who wins each game and watch the tables change.
