What "mathematically alive" means
We give the driver the maximum in every remaining race and sprint (a win each time) and zero points to everyone else. If even then he does not pass the leader, he is out. On equal points the tie-break is the number of race wins, then second places, and so on.
The title chances come from 20,000 simulated seasons with a model fitted on this year's results. They are an estimate, not a prediction.

The survival math
Points + maximum left ≥ leader's points
Example: 5 races and 125 points left: anyone further back than that cannot make it.
